Metro construction can be an eyesore for local inhabitants and tourists alike. But the SMK National Gallery of Denmark has come up with an interesting way to turn metro construction fences into playful works of art so much so that the locals in Copenhagen do not want them to disappear once construction has finished! Moreover, the success of this project is that it was done in cooperation with local citizens.
Denmark’s largest photograph
On the fence around the Marble Church Metro site visitors can see a vast photographic collage which holds the record as Denmark’s largest photograph. The photo collage consists of a remix of paintings from the SMK collections and was created by a number of young volunteers – the so-called art pilots – in collaboration with the people living in the area.
The Metro fence at Solbjerg Plads, Frederiksberg, boasts two giant flowers, and closer inspection reveals their secrets. For the art pilots and citizens from Frederiksberg have created the flowers out of photographs of famous paintings by e.g. P.S. Krøyer and Vilhelm Hammershøi. The photographs on the two Metro fences are all based on digital images of artworks from the SMK collections that we have released so that they can be downloaded for free with no infringement of copyright issues.
This project is just one done in collaboration with the museum's so-called art pilots – locals who co-create with the museum to bring art out into the open urban space.
